  1. Scott says:

Great timing for this topic… Dave you mentioned you take a day and shut your cell phone off… great to here. I have been looking into how I use my time and balance of life with e-mail. I started this because I thought 60 e-mails and 25 phone calls was a productive day and I had balance of life. This thought changed when my wife challanged me in August to leave my Blackberry turned off during my vacation. I took the challange knowing it would be scary but I could do it. WOW what a great week…tough at times to not want to dive into work but worth it. There were 3 things I learned that week:
    1. My company did not close its doors because I was off that week. Business went on with out me.
    2. People will make decisions on there own when they are given the time. Trying to answere 50 to 60 e-mails as soon as I get them was hurting my productivity not helping it. It was carving into home and family life and the thing is it happens with out you knowing it. Now I answere e-mails first thing in the morning and in the evening and this has freed up a lot of time.
    3. E-mails will make you feel busy and productive but I found with me most of them are people trying to cover themselves, elevate themselves or dealing with things that should be said in a phone call or in person. I found the 50 or 60 e-mails I get a day 15% are needed and are productive the others are not.

Since that vacation week I shut my e-mail service off to my Blackberry and it has in fact helped my productivity and my personal life.

Once I shut e-mail off on my phone it freed up time and I was able to re-organiz
my day. I am now able to attend a men’s bible study and spend a lot mor time in the word, I have seen my kids soccer games from start to finish, I got weeknds back to spend with family and I have made huge progress in long overdue projects at work.

    E-mail Sabbath works.
